Your wii doesn’t need to be on cause I just plug my iPod in with my wii off and it charges

All I do is plug my ipod charger to the ipod and the other end to some USB insert-thingy in the back of my Wii
1) is it necessary to use the whole disconnect before removing features for an iPod nano2) if it is how do you disconnect it before removing on the wii?
Yes, there is a usb port at the back of almost every system.
